Norwegian Dawn

Okay, so Donna and I will taking a fam trip on the Norwegian Dawn. It'll be the largest ship we've ever sailed on, and it will be our first NCL trip in many, many years. The last time we sailed NCL, it was on the Dreamward, before they stretched her. That was one of the most bizarre ships I've ever been on. Its layout was a nightmare, not just to the passengers but to the crew. The dining-room staff hated it, because they had to walk great distances between the kitchen and dining room, and the stage dancers had no dressing room. They had to dress and undress in the hallway behind the stage. The Dawn promises to be way better, of course. It gets very strong reviews on CruiseCritic.

I've never sailed on a "free-style" cruise, and I am personally not inclined to like it, since I prefer traditional cruising. There are, like, a dozen restaurants on the ship, some of which charge passengers extra to dine in. I'll be sure to post daily updates of our experience.

I've been lurking on some other travel forums, and I'm hearing some negative things about NCL's freestyle model. One common complaint I see is that diners have long waits, even at the main restaurant. One poster complained that he and his wife showed up at 10 pm, well before closing, and were told that no table would be available for them that evening. Another poster, a single traveler, was told that she couldn't dine in the restaurant of her choice because no single seats would be available. Although I won't be telling anyone on the Dawn that i am a travel agent, I plan on striking up as many conversations as I can with my fellow cruisers to see what kind of experience they're having.
